Oratorio in the 18th century: Handel and Messiah by François FLEUROT, Honorary Lecturer in Musicology
The oratorio is a kind of unstaged religious opera that originated in Italy in the seventeenth century. After being exemplified by great masters such as Schütz and Bach, it underwent a major evolution with two other German musicians, Handel and Haydn. The German Georg Friedrich Handel (1685-1759) moved to London to produce Italian opera. He can thus be described as the first truly European musician. It was in 1742 that he reached new heights in Baroque music with his universal Messiah, by far the most famous of his forty oratorios. Written in English, Messiah is still considered the most prestigious monument to British musical heritage.
