Conférence Université Ouverte antenne de Montbéliard
The Paris Commune: a war without images? Around Courbet
Conference organised by the Université Ouverte de Montbéliard
With Damiennne Bonnamy, lecturer in public law
The defeat of 1870 left a deep mark on French history. Yet many images from the period still extol the courage and heroism of the soldiers.
Conversely, the Paris Commune - a tragic episode of civil war - seems to have left little room for artistic representation. Neither Gustave Courbet nor the exiled artists who gave rise to the Impressionist movement really recounted the event.
Why this silence? Was it impossible to paint the unspeakable? This talk explores the links between art, memory and history, through the eyes of Courbet and the silence of images in the face of the drama of the Commune.
