Generative artificial intelligence and cognitive atrophy: amplifier or crutch?
by IOAN ROXIN, Professor Emeritus, Marie & Louis Pasteur University, President of the Montbéliard branch of the Open University
Artificial intelligence is transforming our daily lives, but at what cost to our minds? This talk explores the paradoxical effects of advanced AI, from major language models to neuro-symbolic systems. While AI can amplify our creative and cognitive capacities, it also brings with it the risk of cognitive atrophy: weakened critical thinking, the illusion of knowledge and infobesity. By examining the impact of AI on our ability to learn and reason, this reflection raises the crucial question: are we still the authors of our own thoughts?
