This conference looks back at the mining history of the Vosges mountains with a study of "The revival of silver mining in the Vosges after the Thirty Years' War", led by Michel Estienne, heritage curator and doctor of history.
When the Thirty Years' War ended, silver mining in the Vosges foothills was in a state of upheaval. The return to peace allowed a gradual revival, driven in particular by Montbéliard-based players, before Gaspard Barbaud took over the business in 1660.
Between takeovers, difficult investments and mining failures, this lecture sheds light on the economic and human issues involved in a strategic mining activity in the modern era.
