The best known is the Montbéliarde cow, a breed created in the 19th century at the initiative of a Protestant breeder. This dairy breed contributes to the production of Comté AOP cheese made directly at the Lomont dairy, as well as other cheeses (Wurtemberg, Morbier, Tome des Princes…), which are enjoyed with the famous Montbéliard sausage with its subtle flavour.

And the famous personalities?

Let us tell you… This unique history is intertwined with influential figures who have left their mark on minds and traditions, making the region a land of inventors and scholars: Japy, Peugeot, and Cuvier, the father of modern palaeontology. This remarkable industrial adventure is closely linked to the development of the automotive industry and craftsmanship, including the company Cristel among others.

And what about places to visit?

On a touring route, natural sites offering remarkable viewpoints over the Jura Mountains (such as the Crêt des Roches in Pont-de-Roide, the Fort du Mont-Bart in Bavans…) are crossed by numerous hiking trails, including the GTJ (Grande Traversée du Jura). Further below, some visitors enjoy boating on the Allan Canal and the Doubs River, while the more adventurous cycle along the EuroVelo 6 route leading to Nantes or Budapest.

The adventure continues at the Peugeot Adventure Museum, which showcases over 200 years of the Lion brand’s industrial history. A passion for science and technology can also be found at the Science Pavilion and the Près-la-Rose Scientific Park, just a few steps from Montbéliard’s river port.
