From the creative gesture to the quest for the sacred
A major figure in the renaissance of modern French painting, Jean Bazaine was also one of the great renovators of sacred art in the 20th century. His work, marked by a profound spiritual and plastic quest, is in close dialogue with architecture and places of worship.
After the stained glass windows at the Plateau d'Assy, followed by a large mosaic façade in 1951 and the baptistery of the Sacré-Coeur church, the artist embarked on an essential collaboration in Audincourt.
This collaboration gave rise to a major artistic ensemble, reflecting the questions of his time about the place and meaning of art in the twentieth century.
The exhibition looks back at this unique encounter between an artist and a community of builders, in the industrial context of the Montbéliard region. It sheds light on an extraordinary human and artistic adventure, where creation and spirituality come together.
