VERQUELURE FABRIC
A woven fabric characteristic of the Pays de Montbéliard (France) Originally, this was a rough hemp cloth, known in the 16th century as « verquelée », but whose manufacture dated back to the Middle Ages. Cultivated, then spun on spindles
in the villages of the Pays de Montbéliard, it was hand-woven in the form of a simple canvas (to cover pillows, bolsters, eiderdowns) or a damask (for tablecloths, napkins).
Verquelure always has a classic design made up of checks in two or three colours (white, blue and madder red).
Today, this « Montbéliard fabric », which was exported to the markets of Basle and Cologne, is woven in the Pays de Montbéliard thanks to a rediscovered expertise and
the determination of the Tourist Office to restore it to its former glory.
