Maison du Comté
Maison du Comté: a fabulous sensory journey!
In Poligny, the remarkable architecture of the Maison du Comté reinterprets, in a contemporary style, the traditional farm buildings of the Haut-Doubs and Haut-Jura regions. Its three distinct buildings, visible from the road to Lons, reflect the three links in this collaborative supply chain: the milk producers, the cheesemakers and the affineurs, united at the heart of the Jura mountains for 700 years!
Opened in May 2021, the Polinois interpretation centre offers a superb immersive journey into the world of Comté, delightfully engaging all five senses of the whole family. Poetic films, videos featuring insights from those involved, an exploration of the key techniques behind Comté, sensory games and even some lovely gems for history buffs… A unique experience to share the taste of Comté together, as a family.
Set against the distinctive backdrop of spruce wood, complemented by an interior featuring soft, flowing lines and enveloping light, the incredible exhibition design unveils three distinct worlds: The Farm & the Dairy Farmer, The Cheese Dairy & the Cheese Maker, and The Cellar & the Master Affineur. It’s almost as if the farmer from the Jura Mountains, the cheesemaker and the cellar master were taking you by the hand to lead you into their world!
Smell the scent of hay in the barn, admire the flower-filled meadows, try your hand at milking and experience the magic of milk turning into cheese. Listen, too, to the sound of the probe tapping the cheese wheel…
Lulled by this flood of sensations, it will be time to move on to the final stage of the adventure: the Comté tasting. This takes place at the end of the tour, in a large, glass-fronted room overlooking the wooded park. A delicious and convivial experience, it will make you want to set off along the Comté Routes to discover the region’s farms, cheese dairies and maturing cellars.
