THE CHURCH OF THE SACRÉ-COEUR

Built after the Second World War between 1949 and 1951 in the "Autos" district of Audincourt thanks to a skilful combination of supportive parishioners, willing churchmen and inspired artists, the Sacré Coeur church is a jewel of light. Fernand Léger, a remarkable 20th-century artist, made the church a landmark of sacred art. He created 17 stained glass windows. The different stages of Christ's Passion are depicted symbolically for the faithful and visitors alike.

As a painter and visual artist, Fernand Léger was able to adapt his drawings to the demands of stained glass. He used the characteristic fragmentation of the squares of glass that make up stained glass windows to reduce to rubble the seamless robe of Christ that usually symbolises the unity of the church. Through this division, the artist wanted to highlight the divisions that exist between Christians. These stained glass windows are remarkable not only for their visual quality, but also for the ideas that Fernand Léger wished to put forward through their use, which sometimes upset the canons of religious art.

However, it is in the heart of the baptistery that the light best expresses itself, imbuing the place with a pleasant, enveloping warmth. Jean Bazaine, dealing here with the theme of living water, drew his inspiration for this fresco from verses in the Book of Wisdom. A masterpiece of clarity, it is a symphony of colour that matches the baptismal font by Etienne Martin, sculpted from a block of Volvic lava.

And don't forget: the Sacré-Cœur church is hosting the exhibition "From the creative gesture to the quest for the sacred" from 20 June to 21 September, on Fridays and Saturdays from 2pm to 6pm.

During these opening days, you can (re)discover and enjoy the exhibition focusing on Jean BAZAINE (composed of 15 kakemonos), who gave all his art and passion to offer our region such a beautiful, joyful and lively work in harmony with the church and the masterly stained glass windows by Fernand Leger for more info: https://www.paysdemontbeliard-tourisme.com/node/23856
