Montbéliard Württemberg Castle

According to historical records, the origins of the first castle date back to the early 10th century, when it dominated the first fortified settlement. Two successive moats, in the 12th century and in 1507, and later the arrival of the railway in 1857, completely isolated it from the surrounding hill.

The fortress, covering around 12,500 m² (approximately 125 ares), was once divided into two distinct parts, separated by two additional moats carved into the rock: the “Châtel-Devant” and the “Châtel-Derrière.” During the 13th and 14th centuries, the Châtel-Devant was abandoned in favour of the Châtel-Derrière. Comprising three towers, the castle served both defensive and practical purposes.

For four centuries, from 1397 to 1793, the castle was the residence of the Counts of Montbéliard and Dukes of Württemberg. Over time, its appearance was gradually transformed into a more residential style, notably with the construction of the Henriette and Frédéric towers. The late 16th century was marked by the presence of the Württemberg architect Heinrich Schickhardt, who built the Bailli’s House (also known as the “Gentlemen’s Residence”), the arsenal, and a hydraulic machine.

It was not until 1751 that a near-complete reconstruction of the comital residence took place, along with the filling-in of the large moat. Only the Henriette and Frédéric towers and the northern spur tower remained.

Following the French Revolution and the integration of the Pays de Montbéliard into France, the castle buildings were handed over to the military authorities, who contributed to the reconstruction of several buildings on the esplanade. In 1880, the spur tower was replaced by a decorative pediment.

Transferred by the army to the City of Montbéliard in 1933, the castle is now a museum housing important natural history and archaeological collections.
