A flying saucer lands in the middle of the night near Los Angeles. A few aliens, sent to Earth on a botanical exploration mission, emerge from the craft, but one of them ventures beyond the clearing where the shuttle is parked. He then heads towards the city. This is his first encounter with human civilisation. Soon hunted by the military and abandoned by his own kind, this frightened little creature, known as E.T., takes refuge in a suburban home.
